Accused Beyond Reasonable Doubt C4

Channel 4 Revisits the Case

Eddie Gilfoyle’s conviction and its serious concerns will be brought to a wider audience as his case features in Channel 4’s documentary series: The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt on 2 July 2026 at 10 PM.

Previously examined by Channel 4’s Trial & Error in 1996 and the BBC’s Panorama in 2018, Eddie’s case continues to command serious attention and concerns.

Eddie Gilfoyle’s Conviction

In 1993, Eddie was convicted of the murder of his pregnant wife, Paula. The jury had to decide whether it was a suicide or murder. The prosecution alleged that he manipulated her into taking her own life and staged it as a suicide. There was no forensic evidence for murder.

The understanding of ante-natal depression has changed significantly since 1993. At the time of Eddie’s trial, suicide in pregnancy was misunderstood. Modern day understanding is that pregnancy is not in itself a protector against suicide. Paula herself described “the baby has come when I am at my lowest ever in my life”.

Fundamental failings in the police investigation and trial have also long casted doubt on the safety of the conviction. Those concerns are deepened by the case’s link to former Detective Chief Superintendent Tom Baxter. Baxter was involved in the wrongful conviction of Peter Sullivan, whose conviction for murder was quashed after spending 38 years in prison. These associations raise pressing questions that cannot be ignored.

A Family’s Fight for Justice

The Channel 4 episode will feature Eddie himself, alongside his brother-in-law Paul Caddick, who has fought tirelessly to challenge the conviction from the very beginning. Their voices are central to a story that has endured for over 30 years.

Sue Caddick, Eddie’s sister and one of his most powerful advocates, is sadly not with us to share this moment. Her words remain powerful today:

“I want them to lift the weight off Eddie’s shoulders and give him his life back. I want justice for Eddie” (2012)

Eddie spent 18 years in prison and has never stopped fighting to clear his name.

APPEAL continues to support Eddie in his fight to overturn his conviction and encourages viewers to watch the episode.
