Reflecting on Justice

APPEAL at the J’Accuse…! Exhibition

APPEAL’s Co-Director, Matt Foot, with Sculptor, Nicole Farhi and Journalist Torin Douglas

On 1st May 2025, APPEAL Co-Director Matt Foot took part in a powerful conversation at Pitzhanger Gallery alongside acclaimed fashion designer and sculptor Nicole Farhi, whose latest exhibition, J’Accuse…!, explores the devastating impact of miscarriages of justice. The discussion was chaired by Torin Douglas, Director of the Chiswick Book Festival and former BBC media correspondent.

Nicole’s exhibition features 25 hand-sculpted ceramic busts representing individuals from around the world who have suffered wrongful convictions over the past 125 years—cases that have helped shape legal history. Her work is inspired by Émile Zola’s famous 1898 open letter, J’Accuse…!, which exposed the wrongful imprisonment of Captain Alfred Dreyfus. Through her sculptures, Nicole gives a deeply human face to the enduring cost of injustice.

The conversation also featured a moving video contribution from Sara Kruzan, one of the individuals portrayed in the exhibition, who bravely shared her personal experience as a miscarriage of justice survivor. Among the most recent cases featured is that of APPEAL client Andrew Malkinson. Prior to the event, Nicole had a chance to speak with Andrew—a powerful and emotional exchange that added further depth to the evening’s conversation.

J’Accuse! is on display at Pitzhanger Gallery until 15th June. Nicole hopes to take the exhibition on tour across the UK, with the next stop scheduled for a gallery in Guernsey, in a continuing effort to shine a light on the stories of those failed by the justice system.
