Bound by Injustice (BBI) Retreat 2026
August Bank Holiday Retreat – A Weekend of Connection, Rest and Resilience
Over the August Bank Holiday 2026, APPEAL brought it’s Bound by Injustice (BBI) community, together for a special retreat. BBI is a community of families affected by wrongful convictions, and participants range in age from 1 to 81 years of age. BBI members travelled from far and wide across the country to join us at the retreat on the Isle of Wight.
The retreat provided a much-needed opportunity for families to relax, recharge and spend time together away from the pressures of everyday life. For many, it was a chance to be surrounded by people who understand, without the need to explain or justify their experiences. Families were able to share their common experiences, find understanding and solidarity, and, for a while, shake off some of the judgement, stigma and isolation that can accompany the experience of wrongful conviction.
"I take comfort knowing that I am not alone…”
“just being together gives strength...”
“feeling part of a group…meeting other people with similar experiences...being able to talk about my experiences in a safe space…”
With activities planned for all ages and abilities, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The British weather certainly did its best to test us, with heavy rain forcing some activities indoors, but it didn't dampen our spirits. Our indoor archery session proved that the rain couldn't stop the fun, as participants tried something new, enjoyed some friendly competition and shared plenty of laughter.
Creativity and quiet time were also an important part of the weekend. Participants enjoyed craft activities and mindful colouring sheets, beautifully designed by a community member who was unable to attend in person. Their contribution meant that, although they couldn't be with us physically, they were still very much part of the weekend and the community.
And the rain wasn't going to stop everyone from swimming! Participants took to a walk to the beach despite the weather, embracing the opportunity for some fun, laughter and a refreshing dip.
There was also space to slow down and reconnect through somatic yoga and a relaxing sound bath, giving participants the opportunity to pause, breathe and take some much-needed time for themselves.
“I was able to off load emotions I keep hidden most days….”
“ it gave me time for calmness and reflection…”
One of the highlights of the retreat was a presentation from Richard Moore, founder of Children in Crossfire. Richard shared his remarkable story of surviving childhood trauma and living with blindness following an incident during the Troubles conflict in Northern Ireland, and his journey towards forgiveness and compassion. He founded Children in Crossfire in 1996, turning his own experience into a lifelong commitment to helping others.
Richard's story offered a powerful and thought-provoking contribution to the weekend, prompting reflection on resilience, humanity, forgiveness and the ways people can find meaning following experiences that have profoundly changed their lives.
“ I felt acceptance…..”
Local businesses and community supporters generously donated a wonderful selection of local produce and gifts for the families to enjoy, including local honey, Isle of Wight rock, candles, glimmer stones and key rings - thoughtful treats and keepsakes for participants to take home. These generous contributions added an extra special touch to the weekend and helped families feel welcomed and valued.
The support from local businesses was a lovely reminder that the wider community cares about families affected by wrongful conviction and wants to play a part in creating positive experiences for them. Above all, the retreat was about creating a safe and welcoming space where families could simply be themselves. The experience of wrongful conviction can be profoundly isolating, affecting not only the person directly involved but their loved ones and wider family too. Having the opportunity to meet others who have lived through similar experiences helped families feel seen, heard and understood.
For a few precious days, the focus was not on court cases, injustice or the challenges that lie ahead. It was on connection, laughter, creativity, relaxation and making memories together.
“the love, compassion you all show……the trust and support, wow!”
Despite the rain, the weekend was full of warmth, laughter and togetherness. It was a reminder of the strength that can be found in community and of the importance of creating spaces where families affected by wrongful conviction can rest, recharge, feel understood and know that they are not alone.
With thanks to The National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ programme, and donations big and small from generous donors and local businesses who contributed to making the retreat feel special, and helped to create lasting memories for the families who attended.
