Andrew Malkinson on the Paul Quinn Conviction and the Fight for Justice Reform
June 2026
In the wake of Paul Quinn’s conviction for the crime that devastated the lives of both the victim and APPEAL’s client Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years wrongfully imprisoned, there has been a flurry of media coverage.
Today programme – Interview with Andrew Malkinson
On 19th May, Andrew joined the host of Today, Justin Webb, to discuss life since appearing on the show the day after his conviction was quashed nearly three years ago.
Reacting to the news of Paul Quinn’s conviction, Andrew commended the bravery of the victim and spoke of his ‘relief’ that the real perpetrator has now been brought to justice.
Andrew reflected upon his success in reforming the law to end the unfair deduction of so-called saved living expenses from miscarriages of justice compensation. However, Andrew highlighted how existing rules still allow for further ‘penny pinching’ deductions from compensation payments. Moreover, he criticised the fact that under the current government scheme, the vast majority of wrongly imprisoned individuals are denied compensation altogether.
