Writing for the June issue of Legal Action Group’s Legal Action magazine, APPEAL’s Co-Director, Matt Foot, highlights Tom Hayes’ case as his Desert Island Judgment.
In R v Hayes; R v Palombo [2025] UKSC 29, the Supreme Court delivered a scathing review of the criminal appeals process. The trial judge was deemed to have ‘usurped the jury’s function’, a stark reminder of why the proposed reforms to restrict jury trials could leave more people vulnerable to miscarriages of justice.
