What a year it has been for APPEAL!

Last July after many years of hard work our client Andrew Malkinson won his appeal at the Court of Appeal. Andy was finally able to achieve justice and the outpouring of support from the public has been extraordinary.

The magnitude of the fallout from Andy’s exoneration has been significant – and the work of our small, committed team has been vital in achieving this. Through strong journalistic relationships, we ensured that Andy’s exoneration received the attention it deserved. Through careful advocacy, we ensured a focus on systemic failings that led to his wrongful conviction. This played a key role in securing three inquiries, including a judge-led public inquiry into what went wrong (see impact report pages 12 and 13).

Six months after Andy’s exoneration, we were again on the steps of the Court of Appeal with the families of Basil Peterkin and Saliah Mehmet. The men had been fitted up by a racist police officer in the 1970s and the Court of Appeal posthumously quashed their convictions after a battle for justice lasting nearly five decades (see page 6).

We will continue to hold the system to account and ultimately, will not accept anything less than root and branch reform. We have been working with the Law Commission on their aptly timed review into criminal appeals which we hope will be a huge step in achieving these changes.
