Salary: £28,860 p/a pro-rated

About APPEAL

APPEAL is a charity and law practice that fights miscarriages of justice. We represent people who have been wrongfully convicted or unfairly sentenced – people like Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years in prison before his conviction was quashed.

Our team of lawyers and investigators work to challenge wrongful convictions or unfair sentences. We also campaign for legal reform.

The Role – Legal Intern

We are looking for an individual who wishes to pursue a career in criminal practice and is looking for an exciting internship before they enter the next stage of education or training. Ideally you will be someone who has graduated with a law degree and has either secured a place on the Bar Vocational Course or has finished the Bar course and is awaiting pupillage. Alternatively, you may have worked as a criminal paralegal, and you are embarking on SQE training to become a Solicitor.

At APPEAL you will have the opportunity to assist our experienced lawyers working on complex appeal cases – identifying and challenging convictions or sentences at the Court of Appeal or making applications to the Criminal Cases Review Commission. We will provide training on appeal procedures and post-conviction disclosure rules. You will be part of a small team that investigates cases, instructs experts and leading counsel whilst also supporting clients through the appeal process.

Alongside our casework you will have the opportunity to become involved in some of legal reform campaigns and to provide support to our fundraising work. If you have social media skills and want to help with marketing and advocating in the media, you can also get involved with this.

The role is an exciting opportunity to work with experienced appeal lawyers and get stuck in with the work of a small charity that is committed to challenging injustice and promoting reform.
