Bound by Injustice (BBI) Retreat 2025

A Weekend of Rest, Reflection & Community

From 30th May to 1st June 2025, APPEAL hosted a powerful and restorative retreat for members of Bound by Injustice (BBI)—a growing community of people whose lives have been directly impacted by wrongful convictions. Set on the beautiful Isle of Wight, this two-night gathering brought together exonerees, family members, children, and advocates in a space created for healing, connection, and peace.

After years of injustice, trauma, and tireless advocacy, these individuals were offered what they so rarely receive—time. Time to rest. Time to reflect. Time to simply be—surrounded by others who understand.

From beach walks and bonfires to arts and crafts, shared meals and emotional group activities, the retreat reminded us of the power of community. For many, this is the only weekend in the year where they can truly exhale, free from financial pressures and emotional strain. As one parent put it:

“This is the only occasion during the year when I can enjoy happiness and freedom with my family, free from financial concerns, and it is all due to the amazing individuals at APPEAL. They truly are our Dream Team.” — KP

The following reflections were written by BBI members—young and old—who attended the retreat. In their own words, they describe what the weekend meant to them: the joy, the connections, the transformation, and the moments they will carry forward.

 Rhimiah – My Experience

This retreat was honestly the best one yet! In past years, I didn’t talk much—I was way too shy. But over time, seeing the same faces each year, I started to feel more comfortable. I feel much closer to everyone now.

The atmosphere was just beautiful—the beach, the sunsets, even the moon fall. The pictures we took will definitely be memories I treasure. The bonfire was one of my favourite parts—gathering around it like family.

Best Moments

My favourite moment was getting closer to the other kids and adults. Everyone was so kind. I’ll never forget Saturday night—we played hide and seek tag at midnight! I stayed up until 1am for the first time ever, and with six other kids too. It was so fun.

I’m just really grateful I got to grow closer to people I never thought I’d become friends with.

Next Year?

I’d love another long journey! Maybe even to a different island—or a different country in the future, if it’s not too expensive.

BBI Youth Journal – 3 Days of Joy

Day 1

We left home early and caught two trains—first to Croydon, then on to Portsmouth. I started to get excited when I saw all the boats—I’d never been on one before! The ferry trip was only about 20 minutes, but I loved every second and took lots of pictures and videos.

Sue and Willow picked us up and took us to the Westbrook Centre, where we were staying. Our room had three bunk beds—it felt like a little adventure. Dinner that night was amazing, and I got to see my cousins. Jamai and I explored a giant chess board (he lost a lot!), then found a hidden forest park with a zipline—that was my favourite. Later, we roasted marshmallows on the bonfire and played in the games room with ping pong and pool tables. After that, we had a really good sleep.

Day 2

I woke up around 6am and had breakfast at 8—it was really good again. After playing outside with Jamai, we all tried archery. I was nervous, but I ended up getting 4th place!

While waiting to go to the beach, I hung out with Grace, Teddy, Willow, Carson, his brothers, and Ollie. We played sardines and hide and seek—it was honestly my favourite part of the whole trip. I hadn’t talked to most of them before, but this time we really connected.

The beach was beautiful. We swam, buried ourselves in sand, and just enjoyed the sunshine for hours. That night, we stayed up until 1am again, laughing and playing together.

Day 3

It was sad knowing we had to leave. We played one last time before heading home. Luckily, Jamai’s dad drove us, so we didn’t need to take more trains. We were surprised to board a massive ferry again—with lots of our friends from the retreat on board too.

I got home at 6pm, tired but happy. It was an amazing trip. I really can’t wait for the next one.

KP – A Parent’s Reflection

“This is the only occasion during the year when I can enjoy happiness and freedom with my family, free from financial concerns, and it is all due to the amazing individuals at APPEAL.”

Each BBI retreat leaves me with deep feelings of reflection and appreciation. Without APPEAL, I wouldn’t be able to give my children a weekend like this—something truly exciting, and something they deserve.

APPEAL thinks of everything. From the transport and accommodation to the activities, speakers, and even the thoughtful thank-you gifts—they pour their heart into this. They truly are our Dream Team.

Helen Pinto – A Heartfelt Thank You

Our BBI family’s retreat to the Isle of Wight left me feeling enriched. My mind was clearer, my body relaxed, and my spirit refreshed. I felt untethered.

I can honestly say, I never stopped smiling the whole weekend. I met amazing people, made new connections, and felt our BBI family grow.

The accommodation, the grounds, the food, the staff—everything was outstanding. The staff went above and beyond for us. They were kind, generous, and welcoming.

I found myself just watching people—thinking how strong we all are to have gone through what we’ve been through. Yes, there were tears, but laughter was everywhere. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone got something meaningful out of this time.

There were no cliques—everyone mixed, everyone respected each other. It felt good. It felt right.

Activities & Healing

There were so many activities—some I’d never done before. Arts and crafts were my favourite. I picked up ideas I can take home and do with my own family.

One moment really changed something in me: the firepit ceremony. We each wrote something down—something we wanted to “let go” or “chuck out”—and burned it. It was simple, but so powerful. I felt lighter, and that feeling has stayed with me.

Everyone was so open and honest. It felt safe. We weren’t judged. And it was comforting to realise that, in many ways, our experiences are shared.

Priceless Memories

Watching DeNiro, Rohan, and Carson just running around, laughing—being kids. That sound of real, hearty laughter. I haven’t heard much of it from them in years. That moment alone was priceless.

On the car ride home, we all shared our favourite memories. I honestly have so many.

This retreat will always be one of my most treasured memories.

Wherever the next one is held—I’ll be there.

COUNT ME IN.

With endless thanks,
On behalf of Katie, DeNiro, Rohan, Carson—and of course, myself, Helen Pinto xxxx

To Everyone Who Made This Possible:

To The National Lottery (Awards for All), thank you for providing us with the funding to make this memorable and healing trip for our BBI community possible.

To everyone who attended, who cooked and played, who cried and shared, who gave their time, kindness, and energy—thank you.

and to the APPEAL team: your tireless care and dedication make all of this possible. This community is stronger because of you.

Here’s to next year.
