THE TIMES - SEVENTEEN YEARS: THE ANDREW MALKINSON STORY

This six-part investigative podcast is hosted by Emily Dugan, an award winning journalist, formally the Sunday Times’ social affairs correspondent. It tells the gripping story of Andy Malkinson, one of our clients who is currently challenging his conviction for rape - a crime he has consistently maintained he did not commit - and for which he spent over 17 years wrongfully imprisoned. The podcast series presents compelling new DNA testing results commissioned by APPEAL that point to another man, as well as vital evidence which the police failed to hand over at Andy's trial. Through new and incisive investigation, including tracking down and interviewing witnesses, the podcast probes the problems with the criminal justice system that allowed this conviction to happen, in spite of the weak evidence against him. The podcast was shortlisted for an award at the British Podcast Awards in 2022 and featured in the Radio Times’ Podcast of the Week.

THE GUARDIAN’S TODAY IN FOCUS - FRESHWATER

This five-part documentary podcast explores the case of the Freshwater Five - the men convicted in 2011 of one of the largest and most audacious drug smuggling plots in British history. All five have maintained their innocence of smuggling £53m of cocaine into British waters and continue to fight for justice. The audience is taken on an atmospheric journey through stormy seas, diving into fishing communities, broken families and maritime navigation technology. At its heart, the documentary is about how the British justice system, often hailed as the best in the world, is designed in a way that makes it almost impossible to access evidence needed to uncover miscarriages of justice.
